AmeriCorps Seniors Foster Grandparent Program (FGP) is an intergenerational program established in 1965 that engages volunteers aged 55 and older in national service. Volunteers provide one-on-one mentoring, tutoring, and social-emotional support to children with exceptional needs or who have academic, social, or financial disadvantages. They serve an average of 20 hours per week in schools, early education centers, hospitals, juvenile correctional institutions, or childcare centers.
Volunteer activities include tutoring children in areas where they need additional support or social-emotional development and teaching parenting skills to new parents. AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers commit to an ongoing relationship with the children serving for an academic year or longer.
FGP Program Advisors are volunteers from the business community and local non-profit organizations. They advise the program director on program policies and procedures, assist with outreach efforts, and develop long-term goals consistent with program directives.
